Term Time Absences
Every state-run primary school in Ireland is obliged to provide 183 days of tuition for their students every year. Standardised holidays for all schools are set out by the Department of Education & Skills and then 3 additional discretionary days are approved by every school’s Board of Management. The standardised holidays plus the 3 discretionary days complete the school calendar for the year. A copy of the calendar for the following school year is sent to each family via Aladdin (school App) during the month of May.  It is also posted on our school notice board and published on our school website. This allows plenty of time for families to plan their holidays for the year ahead ensuring that they coincide with school holidays.
Parents/guardians are the adults who are responsible for ensuring that their child(ren)’s legal right to 183 days of educational tuition with a professional teacher is provided by the school and availed of by their child(ren).
If a child is ill on a tuition day, it is best that they remain at home for health and safety reasons. When a child is absent on a tuition day, the class teacher enters this on the attendance register which is filled in every morning at 10am. As soon as the register is filled in, parents automatically receive a notification on the Aladdin App informing them that their child is absent and inviting them to enter a code from a drop down menu that best describes why their child is absent.
A doctor’s cert is required if a child is ill for 3 days or more. This can be emailed to the school as a photo to hansfieldetns@gmail.com.
If 20 cumulative absences are recorded (for any reason), the Educational Welfare Officer (Tusla) is automatically alerted through our linked electronic systems.
School principals/teachers/secretaries/boards of management do not have the authority to give permission to families to reduce their child(ren)’s educational opportunity by taking them out of school during term time. Parents make this informed decision themselves.
If families decide to do this, they should complete the “Term Time Absences” form which can be found on our school’s website www.hansfieldetns.com under “Forms” stating the dates that their child(ren) will be absent from school.
Once families decide to take their children out of school during term time, they forfeit formal education for their children for the duration. Parents effectively become their teachers. The child(ren)’s class teacher is not obliged to provide schoolwork for children to complete while absent from school during term time, but may do so if they wish.
